ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — The St. Johns River Ferry is back in action after an almost three-month shutdown for upgrades and other work, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority said.
After passing all sea trials and U.S. Coast Guard inspections, the ferry will be free through Friday.
The JTA temporarily suspended ferry service on Jan. 6 so it could upgrade facilities, plus add new bulkheads and public restroom facilities at the Mayport landing. The 25-year-old ferry, the Jean Ribault, was also inspected. The JTA said the total cost including drydocking was about $9.2 million.
The St. Johns River Ferry normally connects the north and south ends of Florida A1A with daily service every half hour, carrying cars and passengers between Mayport Village and Fort George Island across the St. Johns River. The shutdown meant a 24-mile detour for motorists.
