LAKE CITY, Fla. — An inmate at the Columbia County Detention Facility died from apparent health complications Thursday morning, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.
At approximately 5:30 a.m., David Odell, 74, detention facility staff noticed he appeared to be in medical distress and provided aid. Odell could not be revived, the agency said.
Odell was in custody at the detention facility awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania for a violation of sex offender registration warrant, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The sheriff's office said the next of kin notifications were completed and FDLE responded to conduct an investigation.
“We take our responsibility to care for those who are in our custody very seriously," Sheriff Mark Hunter said in the release. "While we provide the best care we possibly can, these unfortunate situations cannot always be avoided. Our condolences are with Mr. Odell’s family.”
