64-year-old dies in Jacksonville Sheriff's Office custody

He was in isolation in the Duval County Jail at the time of his death.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An inmate at the Duval County Jail died just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Renae Ray Carter, 64, was in jail for allegedly trespassing on private property and defying an order to leave.

He was in isolation at the time of his death, police said.

He was last seen outside of his dorm at 9:30 p.m.

JSO says rounds were conducted by corrections officers, who said they spoke to him through the cell door.

A few minutes after midnight, officers conducting rounds did not hear Carter through the door.

Officers "believed the inmate was in medical distress and requested assistance from the jail medical staff."

The Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department responded and pronounced Carter dead at 12:30 a.m.

JSO says the inmate "possibly had an undetermined medical episode."

They do not believe other inmates or officers contributed to this incident.

The Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy of the inmate.

This is the 15th inmate to die in JSO custody this year.
