Truck crashes into Murray Hill crossfit gym, injuring 2

The owner of First Coast CrossFit said just two weeks ago, his truck was totaled while parked in the gym's lot after a driver ran a stop sign at the intersection.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two people were hurt after a truck crashed into a crossfit gym in Murray Hill on Sunday morning, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. Sunday at First Coast CrossFit on Edgewood Avenue.

Both of the people in the truck were taken to the hospital.

JFRD said one person was in serious condition and another was in non-life-threatening condition.

First responders had to use a machine to pry one of the people out of the truck, according to JFRD.

The crash left behind a massive hole in the side of the gym, with bags full of bricks and debris out front.

“I woke up to JSO knocking on my door around 3 a.m.," said First Coast CrossFit Owner Daniel Mattsson-Boze. "I answered the door, and they asked, ‘Do you own the CrossFit gym on Edgewood?’ I was like, ‘Yes I do.’ They said, ‘Well, there’s a truck in the wall.’ That’s not a fun way to wake up.”

Mattsson-Boze rode down to his gym, First Coast CrossFit, to see the damage firsthand.

A gaping hole, after a pickup truck plowed into it.

“At first, I was definitely a little miffed, but at the end of the day, it could’ve been a lot worse," said Mattsson-Boze.

Mattsson-Boze said just two weeks ago, his truck was totaled while parked in First Coast CrossFit’s lot after a driver ran a stop sign at the intersection.

“I think, overall, the construction on Edgewood should help. Having the two lane, one on each side with the center lane of parking, should help out a little bit in the future, but overall this intersection has been a little tricky for us here," said Mattsson-Boze.

The intersection may be tricky, but Mattsson-Boze said the great community around the gym in Murray-Hill has helped him get through it.

“A lot of people showed up in the morning to help us clean up the debris, help make sure there’s no glass," said Mattsson-Boze. "So, we had a really good clean-up crew.”

First Coast CrossFit should be open for its usual Monday morning classes starting at 5 a.m.

Mattsson-Boze has tires set up outside to hopefully act as a barrier whenever they’re working out outside, and he said he’s going to talk with the building owner about getting pylons installed.
