'The building shook': Car crashes into JEA transformer, shuts off power in Baymeadows area

Close to 950 customers were affected by the incident, a JEA spokesperson said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Hundreds of customers were impacted after a vehicle crashed into an electrical transformer on Baymeadows Road Saturday afternoon, according to a JEA spokesperson.

One person was taken to the hospital after the crash on Baymeadows Road and Princeton Square Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. The victim's injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening, a JFRD spokesperson said.

Close to 950 JEA customers were affected by the incident, and JEA crews spent hours working to restore power to the area.

Witnesses told First Coast News the crash made a loud boom.

"The big explosion. Seemed like the building shook. The electricity went off," said Katrina McRae, who witnessed the crash.

JEA confirmed the car crashed, flipped over and struck a transformer which knocked out power nearby.

The crash happened on Baymeadows Road and Princeton Square Boulevard on Saturday.

That boom cut off power as McRae was watching TV, so she took a look out at the plume of smoke outside her window.

“Whenever I came to the balcony, looked out and saw this vehicle, this Acura upside down," McRae said.

She stood in awe as folks from all around came rushing to help.

“They helped get this lady out of this vehicle. Next thing I know, she’s just on the sidewalk lifting her hands up like she was just grateful to be safe. We were all excited for her," said McRae.

The driver of one of the cars involved in the crash said he was trying to turn onto Baymeadows Road went the light turned red while he was still in the intersection.

McRae says it took about an hour for the power to kick back on in her hotel room.

First Coast News was at the scene of the crash around 11 p.m., and JEA crews were still on the site working.
