Keystone Heights VFD fighting to operate again

Keystone Heights VFD says it will have a chance to speak in front of City Council members at a meeting Thursday night.
Keystone Heights VFD hasn't been able to respond to fire calls since 2013.

KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, Fla. -- It's been almost two years since a volunteer fire department says it was kicked out of its own town.

Now, firefighters say they're ready to get back in business.

Keystone Heights VFD says it will have a chance to speak in front of City Council members at a meeting Thursday night. The department is asking people in the community to attend the meeting and show support for the firefighters.

KHVFD is looking for a solution after Clay County parted ways with the department following a contract dispute in 2013.

Firefighters say the county stopped dispatching calls to them after they severed the relationship.

In a new lawsuit filed in January, KHVFD claims the contract was supposed to run through 2019 and had no clause that would allow Clay County to cancel it.

The Clay County Fire Department has since taken over the area KHVFD was responsible for.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Keystone Heights City Hall. It's open to the public.
