Postal service suspends deliveries to home after dog bites mailman, homeowner says

It is not unusual for the post office to suspend delivery to a home or a neighborhood with a vicious dog. The postal service reported that last year had 6,244 employees victimized by dogs.

It is not unusual for the post office to suspend delivery to a home or a neighborhood with a vicious dog. The postal service reported that last year had 6,244 employees victimized by dogs.

During an On Your Side listening event at The Maple Biscuit Company in Murray Hill we heard from a number of people including Vance Moore.

"What's on my mind is a dog bite," said Moore.

He was first in line and wanted to talk about the post office suspending his mail delivery, after his dog bit the mailman.

"This guy says I made fun of him, I guess I did, but he walked over by the dog," he said.

Moore said it happened two years ago. Since then he's been a fight to get his mail delivered.

"I'm not as frustrated as my wife," he said. "She gets excited because the bills are not on time and they're not being paid on time."

Moore said the day his dog took a bite out of the letter carrier, the letter carrier had decided to take a shortcut across his yard.

"My neighbor is over there saying don't come through there," he said.

Why? His dog. It's a cross between a Chow and a Rottweiler, and was tied up near the shrubs.

"If he had stayed on the concrete or in the street, the dog would not have reached him," said Moore.

He said since then his mail has been deemed not deliverable; they're often returned to sender. He held an example of what he was saying, a letter from Missouri to his address, but it had a yellow sticker that reads return to sender.

"They're sending it back to whoever is sending it," he said.

Moore contacted the post office and his congressman to no avail

"I said to the post office I have been living there since 1976 what's going on?" said Moore.

Now the retired veteran is reaching out to On Your Side.

He believes the postal service decision on his mail delivery is an act of retaliation for his dog biting the mailman.

"I'd like to get my mail and I suggested to them over there," said Moore. "If he doesn't want to deliver my mail then transfer him to the beach."

On Your Side is currently researching the matter. Local management will follow up with the customer to provide further assistance.

We contacted the post office and they're working on a resolution.

This statement from Kanickewa 'Nikki" Johnson:

"We are currently researching the matter. Local management will follow up with the customer to provide further assistance."

Moore said he wants his mail and after a two year old incident he deserves to have his mail delivered, and delivered in a timely manner.
