Ask Anthony | Lien removed from Jacksonville veteran's home after price dispute

Anthony Austin contacted Florida Roof Specialists about Antonio Lindsey's issue. A manager said his final bill was resolved and the lien was removed.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An update on a Jacksonville veteran who is accusing a local roofing company of overcharging customers.

Antonio Lindsey emailed the Ask Anthony team after he saw our report about Arthur Robertson and his dispute with a Jacksonville roofing company called Florida Roof Specialists. The business is under investigation by the State Attorney General's Office with 61 complaints filed.

Lindsey signed a contract with the roofing company about one year ago. Lindsey said he was told by a salesman he would only have to pay a $2,000 deductible and they would work with the insurance company for the final payment.

Lindsey's insurance company agreed to pay a little over $23,000 for the new roof. But the final invoice was almost $36,000.

"I don't think they 100% did the work they say they did," Antonio Lindsey said.

A lien was placed on Lindsey's home after he didn't pay the remaining amount.

"I'm a veteran. I fought for this country and this is the thanks I get? I would never do nobody like that," Lindsey added.

Anthony Austin contacted the vice president and general manager of Florida Roof Specialists about Lindsey's issue.  She said his final bill was resolved and they removed the lien from his home.  Lindsey said no one told him that information until we called.

This week, he received an official document in the mail that the lien was removed.

"I didn't think that would happen.  I am blessed.  Thank you and your crew for helping me out," Lindsey told Anthony Austin.

Three things to remember before hiring a roofing company:

  • Don't sign any contract that does not include a full scope of work with potential add-on costs outlined and pricing up front.
  • Get multiple estimates and be careful about choosing the cheapest one. Sometimes a cheap price equals cheap materials and can end up costing you more in the future.
  • Always do your homework. Check reviews and see how long a company has been in business and if there have been any major complaints against the company or owners. Sometimes companies will change names to avoid bad reviews.
