Gov. DeSantis: Construction on I-4 will be accelerated due to decreased travel amid COVID-19 pandemic

DeSantis said speeding up the project will not cost taxpayers any more money and will accelerate the project completion by about one or two months.

During a Saturday news conference, Florida Gov. Ron Desantis announced that due to a decrease in travel amidst the coronavirus the Florida Department of Transportation will be accelerating the Interstate-4 construction project.

DeSantis said speeding up the project will not cost taxpayers any more money and will accelerate the project completion by about one or two months.

The $2.3 billion project, called the I-4 Ultimate Project, will require reconstructing 21 miles of the interstate in Orange and Seminole counties.

The project acceleration will be done in certain areas, including downtown Orlando, by shifting lanes during the day.

DeSantis said that due to this decrease in travel, we should take advantage of this pause and try to make some progress.
