The former Nassau County Budget Director who was fired back in February for allegedly taking $1,000 in missing county cash is no longer a suspect in the case, according to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office.

According to a document from the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, Justin Stankiewicz was initially a suspect in the investigation. However, the Sheriff's Office believes there is not enough evidence for a successful prosecution.

Deputies told First Coast News the case could reopen at any time if new information arises.

The Florida Times-Union reported that Stankiewicz was fired back in February as Nassau County’s Office of Management and Budget director via a letter from acting County Manager Michael Mullin, who says that Stankiewicz took $1,000 in county cash.

Stankiewicz then filed a grievance complaint saying his termination was retaliation for not following Mullin’s orders to destroy county officials’ text messages being sought by a developer’s attorney.
