FDC: 24-year-old inmate dies at Columbia Co. Correctional Institute

LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A 24-year-old inmate died at the Columbia County Correctional Institute in Lake City earlier this week, authorities said.

LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A 24-year-old inmate died at the Columbia County Correctional Institute in Lake City earlier this week, authorities said.

Steven Dorsey, 24, died on Monday, the Florida Department of Corrections confirmed to First Coast News on Wednesday.

Dorsey served four years of a six-year sentence for robbery with a deadly weapon and carjacking with a deadly weapon, according to a police report.

The cause of death is unknown but is under investigation, officials said.

FDC released the following statement on Wednesday regarding Dorsey's death:

In the evening hours of Monday, May 30, inmate Steven Dorsey (C06907) died while incarcerated at Columbia Correctional Institution - Annex. In the event of an inmate death, the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) was notified and has become the lead investigatory authority in this case. The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) Office of Inspector General (OIG) is proactively working with FDLE to provide investigatory assistance. The Department will employ all available resources to ensure that a thorough investigation is completed. As this death and the events surrounding it are subject to an open and active investigation, this is all of the information available at this time.
