Concern over 'dangerous' stretch of road in Bradford County after crash kills 3 people, including mother, son

Undersheriff Brad Smith called the stretch of SR 100 near 109th Street dangerous following a deadly crash on Tuesday morning.

A Bradford County Sheriff’s deputy says Tuesday's fatal crash on State Road-100 that killed three people, including a mother and her son, was one of the worst he’s seen.

The sheriff’s office says that several accidents, some fatal, have occurred in that area before.

According to numbers from the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, there were 30 crashes in this area in the past nine years.

Undersheriff Brad Smith hopes that the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Highway Patrol could add more safety measures.

He also wants people to be careful on the roads.

“This particular accident was the worst damage I’ve seen to a vehicle,” Smith said, describing the scene of Tuesday’s fatal crash. “It’s one of the higher speed roadways we have in the county and it’s a passing area in SR-100, so it is a dangerous area.”

Smith says he knew a friend that was hurt in another crash in the same area years ago.

A cross shows the other person involved died from their injuries.

“This is a tragic incident that has seriously impacted two different families and we want to make that area as safe as possible,” Smith said.

He thinks that drivers also have a responsibility to drive safe on the roadways.

“This is a horrible traffic accident, and I just hope that people will be very careful on the roads, especially with the long weekend coming up, just be aware of what’s going on around you,” Smith added.

Smith says that both FHP and Bradford County Sheriff’s deputies will be patrolling major roads nearby to monitor traffic on during Labor Day weekend.
