Fake Indian head placed on Andrew Jackson statue

An apparent prank draws attention overnight Monday in downtown Jacksonville
Removal of the head.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- First Coast News is working to learn more about an apparent prank made in downtown Jacksonville.

Overnight, someone placed a fake Indian head on the Andrew Jackson statue located in the center of a traffic circle on E. Independent Drive.

The head was life-size and had multiple white paintings on its face with long black hair and a native headband on the forehead.

It's unclear who placed the head on the statue and when it happened.

Around 7:30 a.m., city crews used a bucket lift to remove it, but not before several pedestrians stopped to take a picture.

Jamie Johnson of Jacksonville told FCN, "I want to say it surprises me, but given all the racial tension that's been going on, it really doesn't."

Jacksonville is named after Andrew Jackson, who served as the seventh President of the United States from 1829-1837.

It was during his time in office that the Indian Removal Act was passed. The law led to the mass removal of Indian tribes from across the Southeast.

FCN has placed calls to city leaders and will update you just as soon as more information about this story becomes available.
