JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Commission for Independent Education said via email it learned of the closure a few days ago, but students of Florida Medical Training Institute are just finding out.
Students attending classes on Thursday were given a one page memo that states:
"It is with professional and personal regret I inform you that FMTI campuses will be ceasing operations December 31st..."
The closing affects students and faculty at the four following campuses: Melbourne, Jacksonville, Coral Springs and Miami.
"We got a letter from our regional director," said Kristen Starke, "who for some reason couldn't answer any of my questions."
Starke is one of those students whose education is now in limbo. She is has completed seven months of a year long program.
"We were due to graduate in July," she said. "What now?"
Starke was on track to become a paramedic, something this single mom dreamed of doing, but now her education has been interrupted.
"All of the time that we put into the program is now pretty much null and void," she said. " That's how it seems."
The school also offers a program in Phlebotomy; those students are affected as well.
"I worked really work hard for this program," said Starke.
Efforts for comment from the Regional Campus President were referred to Scott Shaw president of New Jersey based Lincoln Educational Services. He has yet to respond.
The company memo said classes will continue for students who are graduating this year. And those not graduating this year will be able to receive a refund.
The Commission for Independent Education said it will assist the school in placing students with other institutions who are completing their education by the end of December. And those who are leaving should be able to get their transcripts and a refund.
