Duval County School Board votes to suspend superintendent search

School board members voted to restart the superintendent search in early 2024, and hopes to have a permanent superintendent by June or July 2024.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Duval County School Board is suspending its search for a new superintendent, after a unanimous vote Wednesday afternoon.

During Wednesday's meeting, the School Board asked members of the Florida School Board Association, the group they hired to conduct the superintendent search, about the 10 candidates who applied for the position.

Five of the ten candidates do not meet the qualifications for the position. The last time the job was up back in 2017 board members say they received 70 applicants.

The previous search also lasted for 18 months, but earlier this year when the search began Board Chair Kelly Coker said this search will last for six to eight months. She was hoping for 25 or so qualified candidates.

Wednesday the school board also voted unanimously to extend the contract of interim superintendent Dr. Dana Kriznar through the end of June 2024.
