Duval County Public Schools to choose three finalists for next superintendent

Superintendent semifinalists were asked questions by school board members, in which the candidates had to write down and submit video responses.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Time is moving closer to learning who will become the next superintendent for Duval County Public Schools (DCPS).

On Tuesday, the school board will select its finalists to take on the job. Currently, there are five semifinalists vowing to be the next superintendent; one candidate withdrew their name from the list.

DCPS will narrow down the list of candidates to three Tuesday.

The selection process for choosing superintendent finalists was giving the semifinalists questions school board members chose to ask, in which the candidates had to write down and submit video responses. One of the questions DCPS wanted to know was how would they combat misconduct, gun violence and fights.

Daniel Smith's process involved reviewing current procedures and protocols, conducting a comparative analysis with other school districts, then facilitating community listening sessions.

Joe Phillips said he would implement three strategies that would "enhance community partnerships, cultivate positive school culture and create an accountability and communication system."

Cheryl Proctor said she would host roundtable discussions with school officials and its school police chief, and develop a school security and safety plan to tackle misconduct and fights.

The semifinalists' full answers with videos are on DCPS' website, click here to watch.

First Coast News reached out to all the semifinalists, however, the Florida School Board Association says they were told not to respond to our questions, yet.
