Yulee man arrested for assaulting law enforcement during Jan. 6 Capitol riot: DOJ

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Yulee man was arrested Monday for assaulting law enforcement and entering the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot, the Department of Justice announced in a release Tuesday.

Garth Walton, 32, was identified in police bodycam footage from Jan. 6, according to court records. He's accused of charging at a metal barricade and throwing a pole at officers who were forming a defensive line around the Lower West Plaza on Capitol grounds.

"His alleged actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election," the release states.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Walton Monday and he made his first appearance in the DOJ's Middle District of Florida.

Walton is charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or ground, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building and acts of physical violence in Capitol grounds or buildings.

Since Jan 6. 2021, more than 1,470 people have been charged for crimes related to the Capitol breach in nearly all 50 states. 

The investigation remains ongoing.
