JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman was arrested while boarding the Carnival Elation cruise ship in Jacksonville on Monday, as police have charged her in connection to a hit-and-run incident that took place on Jacksonville's Westside in 2022, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Katrice Broomer, 34, faces charges of attempted murder in the second-degree with a weapon, and leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, both felonies, Broomer's arrest report states.
On Nov. 23, 2022, officers responded to the hit-and-run that Broomer is accused of being involved in, at 1327 Pangola Dr., the report states. When officers arrived, JSO says 36-year-old Travis Herndon was found in a ditch; he was medically treated at the scene, and then was taken to UF Health. Officers also found a broken gray side mirror of a Hyundai near Herndon, the report states.
A week later, on Nov. 29, 2022, the report says an officer met and spoke with Herndon to discuss the extent of his injuries and speak with him about his memory of the incident. Herndon told police that he was at a party having a disagreement with Broomer, also known as "Cherrie," according to the report.
Herndon and Broomer then went outside with a group of individuals and "at some point" the argument became physical, the report details.
"Mr. Herndon was unclear of many details but remembers 'Cherrie' getting into her vehicle," the report states.
A witness showed Broomer's Facebook account with the name, 'Cherrie Brown' to officers at the scene, the report says.
Herndon also told police that he's known Broomer through mutual friends for over 10 years, the report states. He told the officer that at the time of the incident, he had roughly $400 in cash and a cellphone in his pocket, which were not with him when he woke up in the hospital. JSO says the items were not found on Herndon when officers arrived on scene, as Herndon believes it was stolen, "however is unsure of the suspect."
JSO says Herndon "immediately confirmed" that Broomer was the suspect after a photo of her was shown to him at his residence on Dec. 1, 2022, instead of being presented with a photo lineup.
The sheriff's office arrested Broomer based on "the physical evidence collected at the scene, the victim's account of events, [the] victim having positively identified the suspect, and eyewitness accounts of the vehicle... probable cause exists," the report states.
Broomer made her first appearance in Duval County court on Tuesday, where her bond was set at $300,006. Her next appearance in court will be on Feb. 14.
