JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is searching for a vehicle of interest after a road rage incident turned into a shooting on Interstate 295 near Beach Boulevard leaving one man in the hospital.
At approximately 4 p.m. Saturday, two vehicles traveling southbound on I-295 near Beach Boulevard engaged in "aggressive driving behavior" resulting in one driver shooting at the other vehicle a total of seven times, police say.
The driver of the vehicle shot, a man in his mid-20s, was hit with one bullet in the back.
He was taken to an urgent care clinic, but was then taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
A second person in the vehicle that was shot did not sustain any injuries.
No suspect is in police custody.
Police are searching for an older silver or light blue BMW that is considered a vehicle of interest. The driver of the suspected vehicle was the only person inside at the time of the shooting, according to police.
The actual location of the shooting in unknown, police believe it happened between the southbound exits at Beach Boulevard and Town Center Parkway.
Police believe the incident stemmed from one driver not letting another driver merge into a lane.
"Seven shots were fired in critical locations in the car where someone probably should have been killed, and thankfully weren't," said Sergeant Karen Dukes.
Dukes said drivers are held accountable when they are on the road.
"You have a responsibility to wait until you can properly merge, you can't force yourself in," Dukes said. "Those laws are there to set up a pattern of driving that's safe for everyone."
