CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigations has released the identity of a man killed by a Camden County Sheriff's Office deputy Monday morning.
Leonard Allan Cure, 53, was stopped by a sheriff's deputy along I-95 North near Mile Marker 9.
GBI says he complied with the officer's commands until he found out he was under arrest. When he stopped cooperating, the deputy tased him.
According to GBI, at this time, Cure assaulted the deputy. The deputy tased him again and used a baton on him, but he did not comply. They say this is when the deputy pulled out his gun and shot Cure.
EMTs treated him on site, but he later died.
The shooting closed down two lanes of I-95 Monday, causing a backup for miles.
GBI will conduct an independent investigation, which will then be reviewed by the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office.
GBI says this is the 80th offer involved shooting they have investigated this year.
