A second teenager is facing charges for the murder of a 12-year-old girl who was shot and killed while sitting on her couch in her Lake City home in August, according to the Lake City Police Department.
Fifteen-year-old Jayden Burch was arrested Wednesday and was charged with the murder of Mariah Smith, 12. Burch was arrested in Miami and has not been extradited back to Lake City yet. Investigators say after processing evidence and conducting interviews for weeks following Smith's death, they found probable cause to arrest Burch. He faces two charges, one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.
Burch is the second teen arrested for Smith's murder.
Four days after the deadly shooting, police arrested 14-year-old Jatarious Flullen II in connection with Smith's murder. Flullen faces multiple charges, including one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
At this time, it's unclear what the two boys' connection to Smith is.
Officers responded to NW Long Street on Aug. 24, in reference to a person shot. Upon arrival, officers found Smith with a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were administered to Smith, but she died from her injuries.
Smith's uncle told First Coast News that gun violence is very common in the area of Lake City in which the shooting took place, but said shots are rarely fired into someone's home.
"The tragic loss of Mariah has deeply impacted us all, and we continue to work diligently to identify and arrest all those involved in her murder," said Chief of Police, Gerald Butler.
