Suspect in Tennessee double murder found dead in Jacksonville hotel room

U.S. marshals tracked Kevin Matthews across state lines after he shot two people dead at a bar in Knoxville. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The suspect in a fatal double shooting at a bar in Knoxville, Tennessee, was found dead at a hotel in Jacksonville Thursday, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

Police say that Kevin Matthews shot himself as United States Marshal Service officers approached the hotel room. They had followed Matthews across state lines after the shooting.

Matthews, 40, along with 36-year-old Steven Davis, were identified as suspects in the shooting last week.

Matthews was accused of killing 28-year-old Zachery Herrera and 41-year-old John Goosie outside of a bar called the Pint House. Davis was charged with assault and violating parole.

As first reported by WBIR, the suspects approached the entrance of the bar and started assaulting Herrera, a security guard at the bar, for "reasons that remain unknown." Goosie tried to break up the fight.

At some point, Matthews pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, striking both men.

Prior to his death, he was set to be charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Davis was taken into custody last Tuesday, while Matthews was reported to be armed and dangerous before he was located.

WBIR reports Matthews had previous arrests for aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence, attempted theft, and lesser charges in Ohio. Records show in Michigan, he was arrested for home invasion and burglary.
