Skeleton found by witnesses fishing in retention pond in Jacksonville's Westside

Police have not determined who the victim was.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Witnesses found a skeleton near a retention pond on the Westside Tuesday near 6:10 p.m., according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office

Police were called to the 4200 block of Old Middleburg Road North after people who were trying to fish in the pond saw the skeleton.

JSO says there is a "houseless camp" nearby, but they do not know if the deceased is a resident there.

At this time, they do not know the identity of the victim or if foul play is involved. They are working in partnership with the Medical Examiner's Office in order to determine the cause of death.
