Report | Man arrested for murder at Collins Road apartment told police victim attacked him before shooting

Gregory Sangle, 43, faces charges of second-degree murder and possession of a bulletproof vest while committing certain offenses in the shooting.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A newly obtained arrest report by First Coast News shows new details about a deadly shooting at the 3 Seasons Park apartments Thursday.

Gregory Sangle, 43, faces charges of second-degree murder and possession of a bulletproof vest while committing certain offenses in relation to the shooting.

On Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, Jacksonville Sheriff's officers responded to the apartments on Collins Road in reference to a person shot.

When officers arrived, they located the victim, identified by police as 55-year-old Arthur George, at the top of a wheelchair ramp in front of his residence with a single gunshot wound to the head, the report states.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The report said the victim's cell phone was found under his right hand and a 2x8 piece of wood was found near the scene.

Police said there were no obstructions from the front door of the residence to the bottom of the wheelchair ramp.

"There was a clear path for the suspect to continue to leave the residence rather than engage with the victim," the report states.

Shortly after arriving at the scene, a witness flagged down officers and said they saw the suspect walking along Collins Road, the report said.

Police arrested the suspect, identified as Sangle, and while being taken into custody the suspect made "spontaneous statements," the report states.

Sangle told investigators that the victim used the 2x8 piece of wood found at the scene to strike Sangle before the shooting, according to an arrest report.

"Based upon the size and weight of the board the suspect claimed the victim used to strike him, it is improbable that there would be no injury, nor would the victim be able to successfully swing it in any meaningful way with a cell phone in his dominant hand," the report states.

Sangle first appeared in Duval County Court on Friday. He remains in Duval County Jail on no bond.

Sangle's next court date is set for Thursday, Jan. 18, at 9 a.m.
