Police: Woman shot while riding in vehicle on I-10, no suspect in custody

The victim was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on I-10 West near Luna Avenue when a red Mercedes sedan started tailgating her vehicle, according to police.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman is recovering after she was shot while riding as a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Interstate 10 in Jacksonville Saturday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to I-10 and Cassat Avenue in reference to a person shot.

A woman in her 30s was located with a single gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital in non-life-threatening condition. 

According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed the victim was riding as a passenger in a vehicle with her husband that was traveling west on I-10 near Luna Avenue when a red Mercedes sedan started tailgating their vehicle. 

The occupants of the suspected vehicle were an unknown man and woman, police said. After tailgating the couple's vehicle, the Mercedes changed lanes, passed the victim's vehicle, and discharged a firearm. The victim was struck in her hip once. 

No suspect is in police custody.

This incident marks at least the eighth time a person was shot while inside a moving vehicle in Jacksonville in the last couple of months.

Investigators are searching for the suspected vehicle which was described as an unknown model red Mercedes sedan. 

Violent Crimes and Crime Scene Detectives were on scene canvassing for witnesses and possible video surveillance that could have captured the shooting.
