Police: Man shot on Jacksonville's Westside after intervening in fight, suspect in custody

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a man in his 20s was shot after intervening in a fight between the suspect and another man early Saturday morning.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A suspect is in police custody after a fight ended in a shooting on Jacksonville's Westside early Saturday morning. 

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to 800 Lane Avenue South in reference to a person shot. 

Officers located a man in his 20s with a single gunshot wound to the lower body. He was taken to the hospital in non-life-threatening condition, according to police.

The preliminary investigation revealed the victim was shot after intervening in a fight between the suspect and another man.

During the fight, police said the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot the victim once. The suspect was located and detained by officers. 

JSO's Violent Crime and Crime Scene detectives were on the scene speaking with witnesses and canvassing for possible surveillance video that could have captured the incident. 

The investigation remains ongoing.
