LAKE CITY, Fla. — A man is facing battery charges after a person was found unconscious at a gas station Sunday night, according to the Lake City Police Department.
Around 8:45 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to the Marathon gas station on 3586 W. US Highway 90 regarding an active fight.
When officers arrived, they found a person lying on the ground, bleeding and in and out of consciousness.
The victim was taken to Shands Trauma Center in Gainsville "due to the severity of the injuries," police said.
Officers arrested Gregory McClellan, 42, at the scene.
Witnesses told police they saw a man repeatedly punching the victim who appeared unable to defend themselves.
Police said the investigation found McClellan alleged the victim struck him with a glass bottle, and in response, he took the bottle and continuously struck the victim in the head until the bottle broke.
"When the bottle broke, he threw it to the side and continued to punch the victim," police said in a release.
There were no visible marks to indicate if McClellan was hit by anything after an evaluation from emergency medical services, according to police.
McClellan was taken to Lake City Hospital for further evaluation and after his release, was taken to the Columbia County Jail.
McClellan was arrested and charged with aggravated battery using a deadly weapon.
He is being held on no bond, according to jail records.
