Diandra Hightower, 37, faces charges of tampering with evidence as well as providing false statements in the shooting death of 16-year-old My'kal Ellis.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Brunswick police have made an arrest in connection to the killing of 16-year-old My'kal Ellis - who was a Brunswick High football player and was shot dead in front of his home on June 13.

Diandra Hightower, 37, was arrested June 17 by the Brunswick Police Department. She faces charges of tampering with evidence as well as providing false statements or writings and/or fraudulent documents. Her bond has been set at $1,104.

According to a warrant, Hightower said in a recorded interview that she was unaware of the whereabouts of the shooting suspect as well as where she was during and after the shooting.

JSO says that by doing so, she was attempting to cover up the fact she had transported the suspect from her residence to another location.

Brunswick police say My'kal was walking home from a friend's house and was just a few feet away from his residence when he was shot multiple times. Upon officers arrival, police found My'kal who was unresponsive. They began performing life-saving measures on the teen prior to the arrival of first responders. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple witnesses told officers that an unidentified person wearing all black, came from around the south corner of the 2600 block of Johnston Street and shot My'kal, according to the incident report.

Police have identified 21-year-old Breon Hartley of Jacksonville, as a person of interest in this case. The police department issued an arrest warrant for Hartley on June 16. He is considered 'armed and dangerous,' according to a release.
