Pedestrian death marks 3rd fatal traffic incident in Jacksonville Thursday

JSO Sgt. Robert Hungerford said all three incidents were preventable.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man in his 40's was killed when he was hit by two cars in the 9100 block of Atlantic Boulevard Thursday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. This marked the third fatal traffic incident in Jacksonville on the same day.

A bicyclist was killed earlier in the day when he was struck by a car, and a driver died when he drove into the back of a JTA bus.

The man who died on Atlantic Boulevard was walking southbound when a driver going westbound in a Hyundai hit him. The victim "flew" into the eastbound lanes and was run over by a woman driving an SUV.

JSO Sgt. Robert Hungerford said the pedestrian was hit in a dark area, and he was not using a crosswalk. He also did not yield to traffic. Hungerford also said it's likely the pedestrian was under the influence of alcohol.

He said all three incidents were avoidable.

In regards to the driver who hit the bus, he said, "I believe that driver must have been distracted. There's no other explanation. The bus is huge, how would you miss it?"

This pedestrian death marks the 50th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.

Atlantic Boulevard was blocked both directions throughout the night.
