Palatka police clarify events of Monday shooting amidst rumors

Police say social media posts claimed that one of the two victims have died, but wanted to clarify that both of them are alive.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Palatka Police Department issued a press release Monday to clarify the events of shootings that injured two people. PPD says rumors spread on social media that one of the two victims had died, but both are alive.

PPD and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting scene at the intersection of Moseley Avenue and Redi Street at 12:41 p.m. Monday.

Officers found a 21-year-old with a gunshot wound to the head, according to PPD. He was taken to HCA Palatka Hospital, where he was airlifted to a local trauma center.

While they were at the scene, PPD was notified that another shooting victim had arrived at the hospital. The victim, a 22-year-old man, had a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

PPD did not say if this was related to the first shooting.

Police say they cannot release the medical status of either victim, but wanted to stress that they are alive.

According to PPD, one of the victims is not cooperating and the other is not able to be interviewed at this time due to his injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
