JSO: One dead, one hospitalized after police responded to 'altercation' near Patton Park

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says officers responded to the 13000 block of Macapa Road at approximately 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One man is dead and another man was hospitalized after police responded to an "altercation" near Patton Park in Jacksonville Tuesday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO's Sergeant Reed says at approximately 11:15 p.m., officers responded to the 13000 block of Macapa Road in reference to "reports of an altercation with injuries." When officers arrived, Reed says one man was suffering from non-life-threatening injuries and when first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded, he was then taken to a local hospital.

Reed says officers then found another man inside of a nearby home, who "appeared to be suffering from injuries." Police say the man was pronounced dead on scene, as no one else was located in the home.

JSO says detectives as well as the State Attorney, responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. Detectives were also canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance video, according to Reed.

Jose Conteras lives on Macapa Rd. He said he heard a lot of noise coming from the home of the suspected fight.

"Last night I heard noises, yelling. You couldn't see well because it was dark. But this morning I left very early and there were people yelling and fighting at the house where the problem occurred. Then a lot of police started to arrive. Then we did not know what was going on, but what I can say is there was a lot of yelling and it was like there was a fight inside the house," Conteras explained.

People who live on the street told First Coast News they have not had any issues with the house in the past. They said it is a relatively quiet street. Conteras wishes there was more light at night.

"I would like there to be more security in this area. And they could maybe put up a street light or something because it's very dark at night and cars are always driving by or you see strange things, and it's scary to live in a place like that," Conteras said.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
