Law enforcement shoots, kills Jacksonville murder suspect in Oceanway area

UPDATE | A St. Johns County deputy and United States marshal fired the shots at the suspect, according to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters has provided an update after a man was confirmed dead at a police scene in the Oceanway area on the corner of New Berlin Road and Main Street.

According to Waters, the man was killed when a St. Johns County deputy and United States marshal opened fire as they tried to arrest him. No Jacksonville sheriff's officers fired; they were at the scene assisting.

The man who was killed was being pursued by U.S. marshals because he was suspected of rape in South Carolina, as well as a homicide in Jacksonville.

A car he was a passenger in was stopped after marshals recognized him on surveillance video. The driver attempted to run on foot, but was apprehended by police, Waters said.

When officers attempted to pull the suspect out of the car to arrest him, something caused officers to open fire, according to Waters. He did not disclose what led to the gunfire.

Police say the suspect who was shot was armed, and the car they were inside was stolen.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the actions of the officers in this case.
