JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville sheriff's officer who shot and killed 30-year-old Dejuane Hayden as he ran from police on Oct. 10 was one of six officers involved in a fatal shooting in May 2020, police records show.

Officer Bradley Griffitts was identified as the officer in body camera footage released by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Thursday. The video shows Hayden holding a gun and running away with his back toward the police officer while being shot at. Griffitts fires at him four times, striking him once. Later in the video, Hayden is apprehended and treated for his wounds -- he later died.

According to the sheriff's office, Griffitts was one of six officers involved in the death of Phillipe Periera on May 3, 2020.

At the time, JSO said Periera was physically assaulting a woman and fired one gunshot inside of a home. The woman escaped and called 911. JSO attempted to call Periera out when officers arrived.

Police said they eventually were able to get him to exit using PA systems. This is when Periera reached into his pocket for a gun.

Six officers then opened fire on him, as he died of his injuries.

Griffitts was placed on administrative leave at the time, along with the five other officers.

Records show the State Attorney's Officers deemed the shooting justified and the officers returned to work.
