JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is dead and another is in life-threatening condition after an officer-involved shooting on the Westside Monday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
JSO says no officers were injured during the incident.
Police say they initially responded to the 2200 block of Hyde Park Road in reference to a person shot.
When officers arrived at the scene they say they heard a gunshot coming from inside the home. JSO officers took positions behind a vehicle in a neighbors' yard.
Police say the suspect came out of the house holding a firearm and pointed it at officers. It was at that time that police say they gave the man multiple commands to drop the gun, but he refused.
Police say one out of three officers fired at the suspect multiple times. The suspect was struck multiple times and JSO says aid was rendered at the scene.
First Coast News talked with a neighbor who says he heard commotion down the street before shots were fired.
"It's 1:30 in the afternoon and I feel lucky because when I heard them, I knew it was over there and I was sitting all the way over here and I have that concrete black house between us," said Robert Houston.
Houston says this shooting worries him since it was so close to home.
All I heard was somebody yelling and then I heard three shots and then more yelling and then four more shots and by the time I got to my phone to call police they were already coming down the street," said Houston.
The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition, says JSO.
JSO says upon entry inside the home, they located a dead man inside. That person has not been identified.
All the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, per JSO policy.
This is the 13th officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year.
