JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting in San Marco Saturday, according to an early morning tweet from The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Police say a call came in around 3:13 a.m. for a possible person shot at the Scottish Inns Hotel on Philips Highway. The caller said that the shooting might have taken place in a room on the second floor.
Three officers arrived and checked the second floor room. They found two occupants asleep in that room, who told police they were fine. Officers determined no shooting had occurred in that room.
As police were leaving the second floor, investigators said a vehicle drove by in the parking lot and a single suspect fired at least one shot from a hand gun at the vehicle, striking the tail light.
The three officers saw the shooting unfold from the balcony and commanded that the suspect drop the weapon. The suspect refused to drop the weapon, at which time all three officers fired. According to police, the suspect fell down in the parking lot while they secured the scene. Medical help arrived soon after the shooting to provide first aid.
The suspect was transported to the hospital and is currently in critical condition, according to police. The suspect has not been identified at this time.
The two occupants of the vehicle didn’t even realize they were shot at. So far, investigators have found no connection between the suspect and those in the car.
No one else was hurt during the incident, police said. The three officers involved have been placed on administrative leave
The suspect will be charged with attempted murder for the occupants of vehicles, as well as aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
As the follow-up investigation, officers were alerted by a citizen of an individual in another area of the motel that appeared to be in need of medical attention.
Officers responded and located a man dead inside a room with what appeared to be at least one gunshot wound.
At this time, it is unknown if this incident is related to the call officers were initially dispatched to or the officer involved shooting scenario.
