Nearly $1 million of cocaine washes up on Amelia Island beach

A beachgoer discovered 71.4 pounds of cocaine that washed up on the beach Friday morning, according to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office.

NASSAU COUNTY, FLORIDA, Fla. — A beachgoer discovered 71.4 pounds of cocaine that washed up on the shore on the beach on Amelia Island early Friday morning, according to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office.

NCSO says that amount of cocaine is valued at nearly $1 million. The drugs, which were inside black wrapping with a logo of a bald eagle, were found at the south end of the beach. 

The concerned citizen called police just before 6:30 a.m. Friday. NCSO is "actively investigating" where the drugs could have come from.

"This significant seizure demonstrates the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement. We're grateful for the alert resident who reported this discovery. Our team is working diligently to trace the source of these drugs and keep our communities safe," Sheriff Bill Leeper said.
