NASSAU COUNTY, FLORIDA, Fla. — Eight people in Nassau County have been arrested for failing to comply with sexual offender requirements over several months, the sheriff's office said in a social media post Friday.
Sex offenders are required to update their addresses and re-register, either two times a year or four times a year depending on their offenses. Failing to do so can result in felony criminal charges.
"Federal and State laws require sexual offenders/predators to register in all jurisdictions in which they live, work or go to school," the sheriff's office said. "It is a felony if you are a convicted sex offender or sexual predator and you fail to register."
The following people were arrested between August and December:
- Michael Albertie
- Dennis Champion
- John Wayne Harrell II
- Kenneth Overstreet
- Avery Simmons
- Christian Simmons
- Jack Tomlinson
- Gina Valdez
There is also an outstanding warrant for Kevin Smith. Sheriff Bill Leeper, who referred to the arrested as "sick," said there is reason to believe Smith is in California.
"It is important to keep track of these individuals for the safety of our community, " Leeper said.
