JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified the man killed in the attack as 21-year-old Chris Jones.
A man was stabbed to death in his chest at an apartment complex in Jacksonville's Arlington area Thursday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
JSO's Sergeant Rudlaff says the stabbing occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the University Place Apartments located at 3285 University Blvd. North. He says an altercation started inside of an apartment which led to the man in his early-20s being stabbed.
The man whose identity was not released by police, was taken to HCA Florida Memorial Hospital by first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, and is where he was pronounced dead.
JSO says several people have been detained, as they were brought to the Police Memorial Building in Downtown Jacksonville to be interviewed. The Department of Children and Families will be contacted because there were juveniles in the house, according to police.
When asked if the juveniles are teenagers, Rudlaff said: "No, no these were children."
Additionally, Rudlaff said "at least five" people were inside the apartment when the stabbing happened; they do not live at the apartment complex.
"At this time, we do not know all the circumstances of the incident or the relationship of those involved... so the case is classified as pending at this time," Rudlaff told First Coast News. "There were people inside the apartment and then other people showed up. One of the individuals called 911 from inside the apartment."
Detectives responded to the scene and are currently conducting an investigation into the incident. Rudlaff says JSO will coordinate investigative efforts along with the Medical Examiner's Office and State Attorney's Office.
"We do have some outstanding individuals that we're trying to make contact with... but those individuals were either a witness or at the scene," Rudlaff said. "Right now, I think we have everybody that we need to speak with in reference to the actual incident itself detained. We do believe that this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community at this point."
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
