JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident that took place on Jacksonville's Westside Friday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the hit-and-run happened at approximately 1:15 a.m. in the 4500 block of Blanding Boulevard. Hungerford says an officer was responding to a separate call at the time the incident happened and while on the way, they found the unidentified man in his 20s, lying across the inside southbound lane of Blanding Boulevard.
Police say the man was unconscious and had "injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle." JSO says the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department was then called and when first responders arrived, they pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The sheriff's office says the driver of the vehicle that struck the man, "fled the scene without rendering aid, calling for help, or reporting the incident." Detectives suspect that the hit-and-run vehicle is a Volkswagen based on evidence left at the crash scene, Hungerford told First Coast News.
Hungerford said that this hit-and-run incident is the 166th traffic fatality in Duval County this year.
