JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man suspected of multiple felonies was caught by the Clay County Sheriff's Office using a license plate reader Sunday.

He was driving a car he stole in Duval County, police said. The license plate number was entered into the LPR system, and Clay County's Real Time Crime Center received a notification that the tag had passed one of the license plate readers.

Officers were able to track the vehicle to Blanding Boulevard and try to stop the suspect. He refused to stop and drove off, but the car was able to be located again, parked behind a dumpster on College Drive.

As deputies approached, the suspect fled on foot. Police were able to apprehend him shortly after.

The suspect was found with a backpack containing a loaded gun, according to CCSO. The gun had been reported missing from Jacksonville.

He was also charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer with intent to commit a felony, grand theft auto, carrying an unlicensed firearm, restricting or obstructing an officer without violence and fleeing/eluding law enforcement with active sirens.

CCSO says all tags associated with crimes or missing/endangered people are entered into the LPR system.
