JSO officer arrested, faces criminal sexual misconduct charges with victim under 13

JSO Officer David Gedert was wanted in Michigan on two counts of criminal sexual misconduct with a child under 13 years old.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — A Jacksonville police officer was arrested and fired on Tuesday on two counts of criminal sexual misconduct with a child under 13 years old, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO said the agency was contacted by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office in Michigan saying former JSO Officer David Gedert was wanted on the two counts. JSO said it was told by Michigan police the incident with Gedert happened six years ago in their state while he was in his 20s.

JSO said probable cause was developed and Gedert was charged with the two counts, which are 15-year felonies for each count in Michigan.

JSO then arrested and fired Gedert. He remains in the Duval County Jail awaiting to be extradited back to Michigan. JSO said Gedert was on JSO's patrol division and had been with JSO for 21 months. He was fired quickly, according to JSO, because he was on probationary status and did not have civil service protections.

Gedert marks the fifth JSO employee to be arrested in 2020, four of which were corrections or police officers and one was a civilian.
