JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting on the Northside Thursday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Police say there are no injuries to officers.
JSO says they initially got a call about a suicide threat in the 5400 block of Lannie Road. The individual was reportedly making statements about harming himself and also shooting at any police that came into his property.
Patrol responded say an officer attempted to talk to the suspect. After several minutes, they reportedly heard a gunshot inside.
Officers were concerned that a girlfriend of the man may be inside the home, so SWAT was called in to assist. Police say SWAT communicated with the suspect for over an hour before he was eventually persuaded to come outside.
Police say the suspect same outside on his hands and knees and placed a handgun on front of him on the porch area. He then picked up the gun and fired at officers, police say.
Six officers fired at the man, who died at the scene, according to JSO. Those officers are on leave pending the outcome of an official investigation, as per JSO policy.
Police later determined that the suspect's girlfriend was not inside the residence and is safe.
This is the third officer-involved shooting this year.
