JSO releases video of December officer-involved shooting, standoff between armed suspect and officers

On December 27, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office shot and killed 26-year-old Paton Pinette after he exited his apartment with a knife and gun in hand.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — New video released by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office shows the moments leading up to the death of 26-year-old Paton Pinette. He was shot and killed by officers on December 27.

On December 27, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter around Summerwind Apartments on Jacksonville's Westside, negotiating with Pinette for hours.

"Hey Paton, this is the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. We see you at the window. We saw you earlier with the firearm in your hand," officers yell to Pinette over an announcement system. "Why don't you put it down and open the front door or side door and listen to instructions of officers."

Police say Pinette who was inside his apartment, shot at officers and officers fired back.

JSO says officers shot and killed Pinette after he walked out of the apartment holding a revolver and knife.

"I think his effort or his purpose was to engage the police into a gun battle," First Coast News Crime and Safety Expert Mark Baughman said.

Baughman says officers gave Pinette plenty of time to surrender.

"I think that they handled as best as they possibly could," Baughman said. "They took cover obviously concealment, they cleared the area to safeguard the public, they tried to talk him out, they did their best in doing so. They were engaged with fire from him, and they had to re-engage or use deadly force back against him."

JSO says officers were called to the apartment complex after Pinette's neighbor reported he threatened and pointed a gun at him while he was gardening.

But it didn't start there. Before that, JSO says Pinette broke into a business on Lennox Avenue the night before. Surveillance video shows him using a sign to break through the front door. Then police say he stole a revolver, fired a few shots around the store and left. From there, he drove to a closed business on Roosevelt Blvd. Pinette is seen shooting out the front glass, kicking at the doors and then driving through it. JSO says he stole items and fled before officers arrived.

Pinette was also accused of shooting at a family members car. This all happened less than 24 hours before Pinette was killed.

"You could tell he was angry, you could tell he was really amped up. The way he was smashing the windows trying to break it out, forcing his way through trying to force his way into the business," Baughman said.

JSO says Pinette had an arrest history of drug possession and domestic battery. He also had two known mental health evaluations pursuant to a Baker Act.

Both the Sheriff's Office and State Attorney's Office is conducting its own investigations.
