JSO officer charged with false imprisonment after 'inappropriate' contact with woman during traffic stop, sheriff says

Reginald McKinney resigned after his arrest, police said. This is the 14th arrest of a JSO employee this year.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A JSO officer has been arrested after making "inappropriate" advances toward a woman during a traffic stop, according to Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters.

Officer Reginald McKinney, 46, was arrested on one count of felony false imprisonment and a misdemeanor battery.

McKinney was hired in April 2022. He was previous worked as deputy for the Clay County Sheriff's Office for four years. He also worked at a funeral home previously.

Waters said McKinney made a traffic stop in the Edgewood area on Sept. 4 due to a suspended license. He made advances toward the driver and directed her to follow him to a side street. He told the victim he could take her to jail but was not going to, an arrest report said. He later asked for her phone number, police said.

He then made "inappropriate physical contact" with the victim, Waters said. The victim said she was "fearful" McKinney had turned the camera off, the report said.

Waters said McKinney turned his body worn camera off.

He was arrested Tuesday after JSO's Integrity Unit found probable cause, Waters said. The incident was reported Sept. 10.

Waters said the arrest is frustrating and it undermines the agency's credibility.

"When a member of this agency violates the law, and I've said it time and time again ... I hope our officers are listening and I hope the public listens. We are not going to tolerate it. We're going to treat them like they should be treated, held to a standard, held to a higher standard than our public," Waters said. "We're going to arrest them and prosecute them, especially in a case like this."
