A man has died after he was shot by a Jacksonville sheriff's officer Thursday. He has now been identified by JSO as 30-year-old Dejuane Aki Hayden.
Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said officers were conducting surveillance in the 2900 block of Justina Road around 4 p.m. when the incident happened.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Alan Parker said officers watched three men, including Hayden, "flashing guns back and forth" and conducting drug transactions.
Police made a plan to approach the three men, and as they approached, two of them complied, Parker said.
Hayden fled, carrying a pistol, and an officer chased him, warning the suspect he had a gun, Parker said. Parker said the officer yelled "gun, gun, gun" before shooting Hayden four times. Hayden was hit with one gunshot.
Hayden was wounded and went to the ground, dropping the gun. He then stood up, ran away and jumped a wall, Parker said.
Police were able to find Hayden and apprehend him, and they rendered aid due to his injuries. The Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department also responded to the scene.
Hayden died from his injuries at the hospital.
JSO said they recovered a firearm from the suspect who was killed and one other suspect. They also recovered a weapon from the third suspect, but it was an airsoft gun.
