JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man in his 60s was hospitalized Monday morning after being shot in the thigh on Jacksonville's Eastside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

JSO's Sergeant Smith told First Coast News that shortly after midnight, officers responded to a local hospital in reference to the man reported shot.

Police learned that the man had taken himself to the hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.

The sheriff's office said the man was working on a vehicle with his friend when an "unknown person shot at least one time." The shooting happened near the intersection of East 8th Street and Evergreen Avenue and the man's friend was not injured, according to Smith.

"Shortly after the shooting, an unknown vehicle fled the area," Smith said in a statement. "We are working to confirm the description of the suspect and suspect vehicle."

Smith further stated that the shooting was "random" and not targeted, as detectives processed the crime scene and canvassed the area for witnesses and video surveillance; an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call JSO's non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
