JSO: Man arrested for manslaughter in shooting death of 16-year-old girl in New Town

Damon Wilson, 27, was arrested Friday night after 16-year-old Layla D. Johnson was pronounced dead inside a New Town residence.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 27-year-old man was arrested on manslaughter charges in connection with a shooting death of a 16-year-old on Friday in the New Town area, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced Sunday.

Damon Wilson, 27, was arrested Friday night after 16-year-old Layla D. Johnson was pronounced dead inside a New Town residence from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of West 2nd Street in reference to a death investigation at approximately 11:20 a.m. Friday.

A heavily redacted arrest report indicates Wilson fled the residence with the weapon used in the crime.

Four people who were inside the residence at the time of the shooting were detained at the scene.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Wilson's residence, where he was located and detained.

JSO said after a review of on-scene evidence and interviews, investigators "quickly" identified Wilson as a suspect.

Wilson was detained, questioned and arrested on charges of manslaughter in connection with Johnson's death.

He is being held in Duval County Jail on a more than $500,000 bond and is set to be back in court on March 18 at 9 a.m.
