JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man who was apprehended in Texas is facing murder charges for a 2023 deadly shooting on University Boulevard, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced on Tuesday.
Carl Smith, 34, is accused of fatally shooting 40-year-old Makensi Baptisme who was found dead inside a vehicle in the 5800 block of University Boulevard on Feb. 4, 2023.
JSO Homicide and Crime Scene detectives responded to the scene and conducted their investigations.
After a review of evidence collected at the scene along with information obtained through interviews, investigators identified Smith as the prime suspect in the killing.
Just over a year after the victim was found dead, on Feb. 2, 2024, investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Smith.
He was ultimately located and apprehended in Texas with the help of the U.S. Marshals, according to JSO.
Smith was booked into the Pre-Trail Detention Facility on charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on Tuesday after he was extradited to Jacksonville.
