JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 20-year-old man is facing murder charges for a deadly shooting in Englewood on Thursday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced on Monday.
Police detained Jefferson Rodriguez, 20, who was walking on University Boulevard roughly 30 minutes after a shooting in the 5600 block of Barnhill Drive Thursday afternoon, an arrest report states.
Officers had responded to the scene around 3:45 p.m. in reference to a person shot.
The report states that when officers arrived, they found the victim, identified by police as Carlos Maldonado-Perez, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department transported Maldonado-Perez to HCA Florida Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
JSO's Homicide Unit surveyed video surveillance obtained from the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. Detectives observed the video, which showed the victim sitting in the driver's seat of a parked red truck when a person wearing a black ski mask and a black puffer jacket approached the vehicle holding a firearm.
The video showed the person firing multiple rounds at the victim before fleeing on foot, according to the report.
Two witnesses told police they observed a suspect flee the scene wearing the same clothes as captured in the surveillance video.
After obtaining a suspect description, the information was communicated to patrol officers in the area.
Around 30 minutes after the shooting, a patrol officer observed a man walking in close proximity to the scene wearing similar clothing to the suspect. The man, later identified as Rodriguez, was detained by police without incident for questioning.
Detectives obtained Rodriguez's jacket and found a firearm matching the bullet casings recovered from the scene of the crime. A black ski mask was also found inside the jacket, the report states.
Rodriguez told detectives he knew the victim but did not provide details about their relationship.
He later advised detectives he was at the apartment complex at the time of the shooting.
According to the report, one detective asked Rodriguez if he would apologize to the victim if he was in the interview room. The report stated: "The suspect nodded his head up and down indicating 'Yes'"
Rodriguez agreed he was the person shown in the surveillance video, according to the report.
Rodriguez was ultimately arrested on charges of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Maldonado-Perez.
He is being held on no bond and is set to return to Duval County court on March 28, at 9 a.m.
