JSO: 2 juveniles killed in Northside shooting

The shooting occurred at 4:30 a.m. at 1000 Island Point Drive, police said. JSO is searching for suspects and witnesses.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — UPDATE: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has identified Travaris J. Odol and Stanley K. Merriweather, both 16, as the victims of Sunday morning's shooting.

Two juveniles are dead after a shooting at a Northside apartment complex Sunday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The agency said the victims had multiple gunshot wounds at 1000 Island Point Drive and the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department pronounced them dead at the scene.

JSO is learning more about the circumstances of the shooting and they are looking for witnesses. They did not have a suspect description as of 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police said it appears the victims, both males, do not live at the Island Pointe apartment complex.

“Throughout the normal day, this is what it sounds like. It’s peaceful," said an Island Pointe resident who did not want to be identified.

That resident said the seclusion along the Trout River is what brought them to the apartments to begin with.

It was anything but quiet Sunday morning as the sound of gunshots and the sight of flashing police lights filled the parking lot.

“To hear someone, especially two juveniles, die, it’s wrenching," said the resident. "Because, what if those bullets didn’t hit those kids and it went through someone else’s house while someone was sleeping.”

The resident said they’ve always felt comfortable and safe there, but the shooting has flipped a switch for them.

“We’re leaving now just to get out of the neighborhood," said the resident. "We don’t want to be around it.”

JSO Sgt. Highfill said the two kids were pronounced dead in the parking lot after police got the call around 4:30 a.m. in the morning.

Highfill said the teens did not live in the complex.

Investigators didn’t find bullet holes in any apartments or cars in the complex, and that there was no further danger to the public.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500, email JSOCRIMETIPS@Jaxsheriff.org or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
